PARIS – These are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis:

NEW YORK CLOSES SCHOOLS

The US city hardest hit by the first wave of the pandemic will close schools starting Monday after the infection rate soared.

The bars and restaurants of “the city that never sleeps” have also been forced to close at 10 pm. More than 23,000 New Yorkers died in the first wave.

GREECE FOLLOWS SUIT

With hospitals saturated with COVID-19 cases, Greece is also closing its schools and kindergartens until the end of the month.

LEBANON LOCK DOWN

Beirut’s streets, generally congested with traffic, were nearly empty on Saturday when the country entered a two-week lockdown with a nightly curfew beginning at 5 p.m.

THE STRUGGLE OF THE CZECH CREMATORIES

Faced with Europe’s highest death rate from the virus, Czech crematoria are struggling to keep up.

Since the end of October, about 200 people have died a day in the Central European nation of 10.7 million people, which barely suffered the first wave.

DEATHS EXCEED 1.3 MILLION

The new coronavirus has killed at least 1,305,039 people since it emerged in China late last year, according to a count compiled by AFP from official sources at 1100 GMT on Saturday.

Around 9,995 new deaths and 660,538 new cases were recorded worldwide on Friday. The countries with the most recent deaths were the United States with 1,596, followed by France with 932 and Mexico with 568.

Beyond the Pacific island nations, only Turkmenistan and North Korea have yet to report a case of the virus.
