JOHANNESBURG – Police said Friday that as the country approached the holiday season, criminals were desperate to collect as they made up for lost time during the first quarter of the year when a strict lockdown was implemented.
Addressing reporters in Pretoria, Police Minister Bheki Cele said this could be seen in the acceptance of some of the country’s most feared crimes, such as residential burglaries, with a rise in home invasions of 8.5 %.
It also raised the alarm about thefts of cash in transit.
Between July and September, the police recorded 24 more cases of thefts of cash in transit compared to the previous quarter.
Cele said police needed to do more to suppress the crime, which sometimes claimed the lives of bystanders and community members.
“There has been progress in eliminating some of these criminal syndicates, as well as in recovering some of the stolen money.”
Despite this, the minister is confident that progress is being made as members of the tactical response team and other agencies approached a gang of CIT thieves in Ekurhuleni in September.
He also praised the hawks for recently catching several suspected thieves and masterminds of commercial crime in Johannesburg.
