Doctor Khumalo: Bafana Bafana didn’t look like a team that was going to score

South Africa failed to score any goals in open play in their 2-0 win against São Tomé and Príncipe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium

Legendary Bafana Bafana midfielder Dr. Khumalo says it is concerning that South Africa does not pose a major threat to São Tomé and Príncipe’s defense on Friday night.

Bafana was left with the 2-0 victory, thanks to second-half goals from Percy Tau and Bongani Zungu, in the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

However, the home team was unconvincing and for the most part did not bother the Sao Tome and Principe backline too much.

São Tomé and Príncipe, ranked 182nd in the world, 110 places behind Bafana Bafana, certainly made South Africa work hard for victory. And in the end the hosts had to rely on a penalty (Tau) and a set piece goal (Zungu headed in from a corner right at the end of the match) to take them to maximum points.

“We’re talking about a player who used individual brilliance, because we clearly didn’t look like a team that was going to score,” Khumalo said during a post-match discussion at the SABC study. “But he (Tau) forced a foul inside the area and we were awarded [a penalty] and then marked it. “

While Bafana improved their performance in the final 25 minutes of the match, the first 45 minutes had seen the visiting team have the best of attack statistics.

“No sense of urgency and no tactical discipline. They (São Tomé and Príncipe) had more entries in the box than we did, ”Khumalo said at recess.

His fellow analyst and former Orlando Pirates forward Phumudzo Manenzhe also criticized South Africa’s performance in the first half.

“One word to describe Bafana’s performance in the first half: disjointed,” he said. “There is no fluidity in the attack in the future. They weren’t compact in the rear. You are facing a team from Santo Tomé, which had more chances to score (first half). Bafana Bafana only two shots, zero on goal, playing at home against a low-ranking team ”.

Bafana Bafana will face São Tomé and Príncipe for the second time when they meet in Port Elizabeth on Monday afternoon.
