In a statement on Bushiri’s official Facebook page, he said they left over security concerns and that despite informing the police, there has been no protection from the state.

JOHANNESBURG – Self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary have left South Africa and are currently in Malawi, defying the terms of their bail.

In a statement on Bushiri’s official Facebook and Twitter pages, he said they left for security reasons and that despite informing the police, there has been no protection from the state.

“There have been clear and obvious attempts to have me, my wife and my family killed, and despite our various attempts to inform the authorities, there has never been any state protection,” he said.

“Our arrival in Malawi, therefore, is a tactical withdrawal by the Republic of South Africa with the sole objective of preserving our lives.”

Earlier this month, the couple were released on bail of 200,000 rand, and the judge ruled that there was no risk of flight.

The couple are facing money laundering charges and blaming the dragging state for not allowing them to clear their names.

Bushiri claimed that he and his wife are being persecuted in South Africa.

The couple were not allowed to leave the country and were supposed to report to the nearest police station every Friday and Monday.

The National Prosecutor’s Office could not confirm whether they left the country.
