This international break has not been good for Liverpool with Joe Gomez injured earlier this week and Mohamed Salah tested positive for COVID-19 today. Fortunately, some players on international service are having a better time.
After Scottish captain Andy Robertson yesterday helped his nation qualify for its first European Championship in nearly 3 decades, a trio of Liverpool players scored for their national teams today.
Forward Takumi Minamino started the fireworks by scoring in Japan’s friendly against Panama in Austria. Minamino played 72 minutes in a central role for Japan, scoring the only goal of the games from the penalty spot in the 61st minute. It was Minamino’s 12th goal for his country in just 25 appearances.
Next up was Curtis Jones, who made the starting eleven (as did LFC center-back Rhys Williams) for England’s U21 European Championship qualifier against Andorra. Jones started the score in the 27th minute in a 3-1 victory for the Young Lions. The match was Jones’ second appearance in the Under-21 category and the goal was his first.
Completing a very successful day for the Liverpool internationals was striker Roberto Firmino. Despite struggling to score in recent months for Liverpool, Firmino took advantage of his two-goal performance during the October international break by scoring Brazil’s only goal in their World Cup qualifying win over Venezuela.
Firmino started and played the full 90s between Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus on the Brazilian front row. It was Firmino’s 15th goal in 46 appearances for his country, and the victory places Brazil at the top of the CONMEBOL WC standings after 3 games played.
