A new analysis of excess deaths in the country by a leading scientist has added weight to the evidence that South African authorities could be significantly below the number of deaths from Covid-19.

If a significant proportion of the excess deaths found by researchers is in fact related to Covid-19, it would push South Africa from a relatively low global ranking of Covid-19 mortality per one million people in the population, to almost 700 deaths per millions, which would place it among the most affected countries in the world.

Analysis by Professor Alex van den Heever, chair of social security systems and management studies at the School of Governance at the University of the Witwatersrand, found that a significant proportion of the excess reported deaths may be related to Covid-19, according to the time of the deaths. compared to confirmed cases.
