Although crime exists in other parts of the country, Cele said Free State farmers called for intervention.

JOHANNESBURG – On Friday, the police appointed a task force to investigate the theft of shares in the Free State amid a surge in crime, which Minister Bheki Cele described on Thursday as “economic sabotage.”

Although crime exists in other parts of the country, Cele said Free State farmers called for intervention.

Cele said that for police to crack down on stock theft, they had to tackle the entire value chain from farms to butchers where stolen meat ended up.

Between July and September, 7,339 cases of cattle theft were reported across the country, while 26,322 sheep were stolen. More than 14,000 head of cattle were also stolen.

“Stock theft is a serious problem that requires serious attention, not just from us as a police officer, but from other departments that can help.”

Despite the massive numbers in this category of crime, a decline has been recorded in all provinces except the North Cape.
