Elon Musk tests positive – and negative – for COVID-19

LOS ANGELES – Tesla founder Elon Musk says he tested positive for the new coronavirus and also tested negative, offering a skeptical view of the validity of the procedures.

In a series of tweets early Friday, Musk said he had conflicting results from rapid “antigen” tests for COVID-19 after having had “mild colds, cough and mild fever” in recent days.

“Something extremely false is happening. Today she got tested for covid four times,” he wrote.

“Two tests were negative, two were positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse.”

Musk, who earlier this year dismissed concerns about the pandemic and fought the shutdown orders in California, said he planned to run the more accurate PCR test that needs to be sent to a lab for analysis.

Rapid antigen tests have gained traction in recent weeks due to laboratory delays, but they are less sensitive to small amounts of virus and more likely to give a false negative.

In March, Musk appeared to dismiss concerns about the pandemic, saying “I suppose the panic will cause more damage than the virus.”

Two months later, he defied shutdown orders in California to reopen Tesla’s assembly plant, defying authorities to arrest him.
