JOHANNESBURG – The Assistant Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), Jessie Duarte, calls for calm and discipline in Bloemfontein, where her colleague Ace Magashule, a member of the NEC, will appear in court on charges of corruption.

“We call on the ANC members who are in Bloemfontein at this time to remember that there is an ANC and that we have asked all our members to respect the fact that the law must take its course. The SG himself has done that. called. We see people burning T-shirts … we don’t agree with what you’re doing. “

Magashule supporters have defied orders not to wear party clothes and many have burned T-shirts with the face of President Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding his resignation.

Duarte said it was disappointing and asked for unity.

“When supporting the ANC, do so with a lot of discipline. You have the right to express your views wherever you are. The ANC will never prevent you from expressing your views, but what you need to remember is that support for the secretary-general cannot result in the destruction or division of the ANC. “

Magashule is one of eight defendants in the case involving a 255 million rand contract to replace asbestos roofs on houses in the Free State.

It all dates back to Magashule’s time as the province’s prime minister, and years later, many residents are still waiting for the asbestos roofs to be replaced amid reports that some people have even become ill as a result.

Magashule turned himself in to the Hawks on Friday morning so they could process his arrest following the warrant issued against him.

Earlier, there was a confrontation between supporters and the police.

Mkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans spokesman and staunch Magashule supporter Carl Niehaus was dismissed by police out of court.

It is unclear why he was defying police orders, but former North West Prime Minister Supra Mahumapelo defused the situation and then accused police of mishandling the crowds that had gathered this morning.

Niehaus claimed he was injured and accused the police of damaging his hearing aid.
