JOHANNESBURG – Amid calls for calm, a nightly vigil, and unfounded claims of a political plot against the secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC), Ace Magashule is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday morning. .

Magashule will face charges related to the multi-million rand asbestos project.

R255 million was paid in a tender to remove asbestos from house roofs while Magashule was Premier.

Magashule is accused of obtaining up to R10 million from the failed project.

The Hawks issued a warrant for Magashule’s arrest earlier this week.

The elite crime-fighting unit said he was expected to turn himself in at its Bloemfontein office.

After that, Magashule is expected to appear before the local magistrates court, where he will be formally charged.

Police Minister Bheki Cele said that no one was above the law.

A group of protesters in the provincial ANC wants Magashule to be held accountable for its actions. Kelebogile Wesi is among them: “We are happy that justice is finally being served. Ace will have his time in court as he has always stated that he is willing. “

Magashule said it would cooperate with the police, insisting that it had done nothing wrong.

At the same time, his supporters, including Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwamdile Masina, have said they would be here to support their leader.

Thousands of ANC supporters are expected to march to the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday morning under the slogan “Hands off Ace Magashule.”

People are being transported by buses from various branches of the ANC.

Members wear ANC T-shirts despite party calls for supporters not to wear ANC insignia.

Veterans spokesman Carl Niehaus said: “The situation we face is that the comrades who have come to Mangaung are here as people who have been relegated by their branches, by their regions and provinces to come. People come here as concerned members of the ANC and express their allegiance to the ANC by wearing ANC insignia. “
