‘We do not elect executive directors, they are appointed’

Mato Madlala will continue as acting CEO of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after some of the clubs proposed to her to stay in her position.

Madlala has been the league’s interim executive director for just over five years since she replaced Brad de Villiers, who left the organization on November 10, 2015.

Reacting to the unexpected proposal, PSL President Dr. Irvin Khoza said it will be discussed by the newly appointed executive committee that was confirmed after the Quadrennial General Meeting of the National Football League held in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“There is no election of a CEO, it is only a proposal that the executive must evaluate when we call the first meeting of the executive committee.

“The wish of the Board of Governors (BoG) should be discussed at the executive committee meeting. We do not elect the executive directors, they are appointed,” Khoza said.

The proposal for Madlala to continue in her post was made by Baroka FC President Khurishi Mphahlele and was immediately supported from the room by Swallows FC President David Mogashoa.

“I propose that we keep Ms. Mato Madlala as Acting Executive Director, in my opinion she has done a wonderful job and I am happy with the way she is handling her role,” said Mphahele.

Swallows would also like to support Mr. Mphahlele’s motion. I think Ms. Mato Madlala has done very well for the league under difficult circumstances and I think she should continue to lead this complex organization.

“As Mr. (Jomo) Sono said, she understands our business, speaks the same language as us and it is very important that she move forward,” said Mogashoa.

When asked if he agreed with the proposal, Madlala said: “It is a proposal from the floor and the executive will take it.”

It is not immediately clear if Madlala, who is the president of Golden Arrows and a member of the executive committee, will continue to act or if she will be appointed full time.

The NSL Executive Committee as of Wednesday are: Irvin Khoza, Kaizer Motaung, Mato Madlala, John Comittis, Stan Matthews, David Thidiela, Rejoice Simelane, Robert Benadie.
