Itumeleng Khune has responded to critics who questioned his inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad to face São Tomé and Príncipe in the qualifying rounds of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon), arguing that he deserves to be selected even though he is not the First choice at Kaizer Chiefs.
The Bafanas will face the Islanders in back-to-back playoffs at Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow (9:00 PM), and at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday (3:00 PM), with eyebrows raised as the Los Angeles’ coach Bafana, Molefi Ntseki, named Khune to the squad even though he is fighting for form at the club level.
But the 33-year-old responded and said that his experience will be passed on to the next young people.
“To be honest, the critics will always be there, and that’s what brings out the best in every player,” Khune told the media yesterday.
“I think the strong mentality has kept me going from day one. I always turn negativity into positivity, and that has kept me going, and I will continue to work hard at club level to regain my confidence. I was away for nine months and I can’t be hard on myself.
“The guys know what I have accomplished in my career and there is no need to remind them. Everyone knows it and is inspired by me. I don’t have to come to camp and start being stubborn and looking down on my teammates.
