Cape Town – An Instagram page dedicated to sharing the experiences of Brackenfell High School students offers a shocking insight into the racism experienced by many current and former students at the school.
Earlier this year, in the wake of the global #BlackLivesMatter movement, students across Cape Town exposed what they consider to be the blatant racism experienced at the hands of staff and peers in private and older Model C schools.
Many current and former Brackenfell High School students spoke about the traumatic treatment, racism, and discrimination they faced at school.
The school made headlines recently when a violent clash broke out between the EFF and residents as the party protested alleged racism at the school following reports of a privately organized costume ball for white matrix students only.
An enrollment student, who cannot be named out of concern for her safety, said the school should have been aware of how the event would have been broadcast to students of color, who were not invited to the party, unless some were aware of a second. -Hand invitation that circulated on WhatsApp two days before the masked ball.
“The reason this is such a difficult thing for us to swallow is because these racist incidents have been piling up. There are many cases that I can share in which students of color were treated unfairly.
“We are not even surprised that the school is denying any participation because that is their option for everything; they deny and sweep under the rug ”.
According to the Instagram page, past and present Brackenfell High students submitted a formal memorandum that was delivered to the principal, chairman of the school’s governing body, and staff on July 8.
The school’s governing body (SGB) addressed parents in a letter signed by the president, Dr. Guillaume Smit, and principal Jannie Muller, which read: “Brackenfell High School is an inclusive and integrated school that promotes reconciliation. and non-racism. ”
