Cape Town – The Daily Voice may reveal details of the controversial private matrix function that is at the center of the racism allegations against Brackenfell High School.

According to an invitation flyer, the “Masquerade Ball MX’20” event was held at Skilpadvlei Wine Farm in Stellenbosch on October 17.

The cost was R500 per person and the assistance was “limited to 100 people”.

The flyer was distributed to a WhatsApp group called “Matrix 2020” that included various teachers as members.

The flyer with information about the matrix ball was shared in a private WhatsApp group.

Screenshots of the group were leaked at Daily voice by various school sources.

A colored licensee told the Daily voice they were not included in this private chat group: “We have class WhatsApp groups where information is generally shared, but it was not the case of the event that clearly shows that we were meant to be excluded.

Current and former students, as well as parents, have taken to social media to lash out at the school and its teachers, accusing them of segregation and organizing a “white-only matrix dance.”

However, the school’s governing body (SGB) and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) noted that this was not an official school event.

WCED said: “We are aware that a private event was held, which was not organized by the school.

“Two educators were invited to the event and attended as guests.”

However, according to the guest list, which has been shared with the Daily voiceAt least four teachers were among the 77 guests on the seating chart.

Student names are blacked out to protect their identities.

SEATS: Teachers on guest list

Responding to questions about the list, WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said that only 42 out of the school’s group of 254 12th graders attended the event.

“Brackenfell High School allows students to bring outside classmates to a matrix dance, since they are under the age of 21.

“Two WCED teachers and one SGB teacher attended the event. They had the right to attend a dinner at the invitation of a parent. “

A company that makes photos and videos of school events uploaded a video of the guests arriving at the event on the YouTube channel “Hoerskool Brackenfell High”.

An annoyed black tuition student said: “It was rubbed in our faces when it was posted on the school’s social media platform, and one of the people who planned it is at SGB.

“In the SGB they are the white parents just because when they choose people, they speak in Afrikaans.”

The video, titled “Matric Farewell Mask Ball,” was removed after getting more than 1,000 views.

When asked to explain the title and why the video was removed, Bronagh said: “We do not have access to private company content at private events.

“Yes, the company also works for the school, it works for many clients.

“There is nothing wrong with parents using a family business with which they have had previous experience at school.”

But a 12th grade student of color believes that non-white students were deliberately excluded from attending the event.

“There are 170 white, 50 colored and 34 black registered. You want to tell me of all these black and colored enrollees, the white children did not have a single person with whom they were friends or with whom they got along to invite to the event?

Education MEC Debbie Schafer said she was waiting for a full written report on the event.
