  • The prime minister has urged everyone he met in the past seven days to test for Covid-19.

Eastern Cape Prime Minister Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane tested positive for Covid-19.

His office announced this in a statement Thursday afternoon.

Mabuyane spokesman Mvusiwekhata Sicwetsha said the 44-year-old had experienced flu-like symptoms and this led him to undergo a Covid-19 test.

“When his test results came back positive, Prime Minister Mabuyane began to inform his family members, his office staff, and some of the people he had recently met with about his test results and encouraged who might have symptoms similar to taking Covid-19 tests, “Sicwetsha said.

He added that Mabuyane encouraged anyone he had met in the past seven days, who may have or feel similar symptoms, to get tested for Covid-19 to find out their health status.

Sicwetsha said Mabuyane was isolating himself at home where he would continue his official duties, using technology for meetings and to communicate with his office, members of the Executive Council, local and national government leaders and other stakeholders.

The provincial government wished Mabuyane a speedy recovery while he was isolated at home, Sicwetsha said.

All events and programs in the premier’s diary have been postponed for now, Sicwetsha added.
