Stoned vehicles, burned buses at Khayelitsha protest

CAPE TOWN – Authorities are monitoring a protest in and around Khayelitsha.

There have been reports of vehicle being stoned and road barricades.

A section of the N2 road has been affected, causing delays.

The protests are linked to land invasions.

JP Smith from the city of Cape Town explained that people who had occupied land in Khayelitsha during the COVID-19 shutdown had taken to the streets demanding services.

“The city has made it very clear to them that there is no possibility of that land being served. In most cases, the land is not suitable for human habitation, in some cases, the land is for existing formal dwellings of the that we will have to evict these people once the lock has moved. “

Meanwhile, the Golden Arrow bus service said its vehicles had also been attacked in Makhaza during the protest.

Bus services said three buses had caught fire.
