DURBAN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) appears to be the biggest loser in Wednesday’s by-elections, according to preliminary results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

While the results are still being counted, and the final result is expected to be announced at noon, the DA appears to have lost at least eight seats in Gauteng, the Northwest, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape.

In another development, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) appears to have overshadowed the African National Congress (ANC) during the by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal.

Preliminary results from the IEC detail that the IFP has taken five of the 12 disputed districts in KwaZulu-Natal.

This includes a room in Nkandla, which was previously under the ANC.

In KZN, the DA appears to have retained three wards while the ANC retained four.

The DA has been the biggest loser in Gauteng, where it lost two districts to the ANC and another two to the Patriotic Alliance and the Al Jama-Ah party.

The ANC appears to have won in 12 of the 14 disputed districts in Gauteng.

In the Western Cape, where 11 districts were contested, the district attorney lost a district to the Good Party while managing to retain eight districts.

The ANC has preserved two districts in the Western Cape.

The ANC has won 19 of the seats contested in the Northern Cape.

These include two seized from the DA, who managed to keep a seat in the local Renosterberg municipality.

In the Eastern Cape, 19 districts were contested.

The ANC retained 18 but lost one room to the DA.

In Mpumalanga, where five rooms were contested, the DA managed to keep two rooms while the ANC retained three rooms.

The district attorney lost his two flags to the ANC and Freedom Front Plus in the six that were disputed in the Northwest.
In all, the ANC won five districts in the Northwest.

So far, the results are only available for three of the four contested districts in the Free State.
