Tributes are coming in to former Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Mongameli Bobani, who died tonight.
Bobani, who was hospitalized three weeks ago with Covid-19, was removed as mayor of the NMB in December 2019 via a motion of no confidence, after being accused of corruption and mismanagement.
Announcing on Twitter, the leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Bantu Holomisa, said: “It is sad to announce the passing of Councilor Bobani tonight. Our condolences to family and friends.”
Holomisa said that UDM thanks her family for allowing her to contribute and build it. A hardworking cadre that was always available to help the communities. “May his soul rest in peace”.
Holomisa praised Bobani for the good work he had done for the people of the NMB and his tireless efforts to grow the party in the Eastern Cape.
“He was always available and ready to roll up our sleeves, and we will miss his energy and enthusiasm,” said Holomisa. Arrangements for his funeral will be announced in due course.

Nelson Mandela Bay Township Acting Mayor Thsonono Buyeye said he was shocked and deeply saddened by Bobani’s passing.
Buyeye said that Bobani still had a lot to offer the City. “I have had the honor of serving under his leadership and also the opportunity to appoint him in mine as MMC of Infrastructure and Engineering.
“Unfortunately, his tenure in this last position was short-lived. As much as we knew he had contracted Covid-19 and was struggling with it, we had always hoped that he would make it. However, our hopes would not be realized.” Buyeye said.
He said that he had learned a lot from Bobani and that he had become a very dear friend to him.
“I wish to convey my deepest condolences to his wife and children, his immediate family and close friends, and the UDM contender. May God grant them strength in this difficult hour and comfort them beyond our understanding.”
ANC councilor Mvuzo Mbelekane said Bobani was very energetic, very passionate about his work and always had time to listen to him even if they weren’t in the same organization.
Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) Chairman Mandlakazi Skefile said MBDA, management and staff wish to send their deepest condolences to the family of the late Councilor Bobani, his colleagues on the council and your party.
“We wish his family strength and light during this difficult time.”
