President Cyril Ramaphosa is addressing South Africans tonight to provide an update on the government’s response plan to Covid-19.
Despite the confusion earlier in the day, the Presidency confirmed the address on its social media platforms.
The speech comes a day after a special Cabinet session that considered the recommendations of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) meeting on handling the pandemic.
The meetings were said to consider a further tightening of restrictions amid an increase in the rate of coronavirus infection.
However, the special adviser to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, said in a radio interview on Wednesday that he believed that if one looked at infection statistics for seven days, there was no need for alarm.
“If you look at an average of seven days, we have been quite stable and have done reasonably well. We had a bit of a slope but (now) it has calmed down and the situation now is that we have local transmission at a fairly local level, “he told Jacaranda FM.
South Africa is currently at blockade alert level 1 and the country remains in a state of national disaster, which expires in the middle of the month but may be renewed by the government.
