A lawyer appeared in Tzaneen Magistrates Court on Tuesday on charges of fraud amounting to Rand 6 million that allegedly pocketed from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) payments intended for the victims.

According to Hawks spokesman Captain Matimba Maluleke, it is alleged that between 2016 and 2018, Solomon Maboku Maponya, 43, an independent attorney, represented five victims in their RAF car accident compensation claims.

“The victims claimed they were puzzled by the late payment, until they asked RAF officials during their tour of the Tzaneen area. They found that their claims were processed and paid a long time ago,” Maluleke said.

A fraud case was opened and referred to the Hawks’ Serious Business Crime Investigation unit for further investigation.

Maponya was arrested Tuesday after he turned himself in to police.

His bail was set at R10,000 and the case was postponed until December 10.
