JOHANNESBURG – It is unclear whether the secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC), Ace Magashule, will step aside as the corruption case against him advances.

The National Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued for Magashule, who will appear in court in Bloemfontein on Friday.

He faces a series of corruption allegations related to a controversial multi-million dollar asbestos contract in the Free State during his time as Premier.

The ANC said it would communicate any updates on the arrest warrant issued for Magashule if necessary.

The ruling party has issued a statement with few details.

The party claims to have heard media reports about the order.

He has echoed Magashule’s comments about consulting his legal team on how he can best respond to the latest development.

ANC spokesman Pule Mabe said they would wait to see what direction this latest development takes.

“The secretary general declared on more than one occasion, including through his legal team, that he would cooperate with any process undertaken by law enforcement agencies. The ANC will closely monitor these developments and accordingly communicate any updates should the need arise. “

Magashule maintains that he has done nothing wrong, adding that he is a law-abiding citizen.
