JOHANNESBURG – Wits Institute for Reproductive Health and HIV has come up with a new preventative measure, which is 90 percent effective.
Initial results from clinical trials show that taking an injection of PrEP and CAB LA, once every eight weeks, it is more effective than taking a daily pill in preventing HIV among women.

The Wits researchers say that treatment should be accessible to people who may not be able to afford it.

However, the researchers also caution that the availability of the drug should not be rushed.
“We are not looking for something that is immediately available, but it will be a fast track, both from a clinical research standpoint and from a manufacturing side,” said Helen Rees of the Wits Institute for Reproductive Health and HIV.
“Access to this in a country like ours, with such high numbers every year, could be a game changer. But we will have to have a little patience for a few months.”

The research was conducted in several countries like South Africa, Botswana, eSwatini, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.
