Pretoria – Two senior Hawks officers and a former colleague were arrested Tuesday for their alleged involvement in fraudulent promotions in South Africa’s elite police unit.
“Two senior Hawks officers and a former officer stationed in the Silverton office aged 48, 55 and 57 were arrested this morning for alleged involvement in fraud and corruption in relationships with promotional appointments at the Priority Crimes Investigation Directorate.” the Hawks said. .
All three are suspected of abusing their power and authority while participating on selection panels within the organization.
His arrest stems from an investigation that began when irregularities were detected in the management offices in the Northwest province, but which spread throughout the country.
“The investigation spans all provinces,” the Hawks said, adding that the investigation was part of “a quest to rid the organization of those members who are not willing to be blameless.”
Hawks chief Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya said: “It should be clear by now that the leadership does not favor or harm anyone in the execution of its mandate.”
“The principle that is followed is that regardless of the seniority of the alleged officers, the members of the Directorate continue to carry out their work without fear, favor or prejudice.”
He added that a member’s rank was irrelevant and that no officer could influence the outcome of an investigation against him.
“While we continue to treat all suspects as innocent until proven otherwise, when there appears to be sufficient evidence, we will ensure the suspect’s presence in court,” Lebeya said.
The three suspects would soon appear in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court, Hawks spokesman Col. Katlego Mogale said.
