An arrest warrant has been issued for Ace Magashule, Secretary General of the ruling African National Congress of South Africa.

Magashule is one of the top six officials of the ruling party and is the secretary general of the ANC.

the Daily maverick reported that Magashule will be arrested and charged for his alleged role in the R255 million Free State asbestos audit contract.

Some of the charges are understood to relate to payments made to certain third parties with the proceeds of the contract, allegedly at the direction of Magashule.

Hawks Captain Linda Steyn confirmed the arrest warrant to Newsroom Afrika as part of a serious corruption investigation at the Free State.

“The (arrest warrant) was signed today by the public prosecution department and returned to the investigating officer for service on Friday,” he said.

“The investigation had to be complete before an arrest was made. The Hawks must complete the investigation first, and if there is sufficient evidence to convict that person, an arrest warrant will be issued. “

Steyn said the Hawks are confident he has enough evidence for a conviction.

“The corruption unit in the Free State has been working day and night on this issue and there is enough evidence at this stage for an arrest warrant to be issued,” he said.

Magashule told reporters Tuesday that he was “not concerned” by news reports that an arrest warrant had been issued against him, and said he had done nothing wrong.
