• The Toyota Fortuner gets a styling update with a new front look and improved safety features.
• The new 2.8 GD-6 VX is the new flagship model.
• The Fortuner also relives a power upgrade from its 2.8-liter engine with 150kW and 500Nm outputs.
Toyota’s ubiquitous Fortuner SUV has undergone surgery for 2020 and also benefited from a more powerful engine and improved safety system.
The new 2.8 GD-6 VX is the top of the range model. The aesthetic changes are most noticeable at the front and include a larger blacked out grille with a wavy mesh pattern (glossy finish on the VX) that is accompanied by a “skid plate” with silver accents.
The LED headlights now feature ‘scalloped’ daytime running light guides and are linked by LED fog lamps and strip-shaped LED turn signal elements on the lower bumper.
On the VX grade, the side profile is enhanced by a thin chrome belt line that extends to the rear. There are also new taillight units with integrated light guides.
The 2.8 GD-6 variants receive a new 18-inch alloy wheel in turbine design and metal surface treatment, using 265-60-R18 tires.
Toyota says customer feedback is the reason behind the switch to a black interior from the brown leather upholstery that was previously used.
A new instrument cluster design has been used with metallic blue dial dials and white needle pointers.
Updated infotainment system
A new 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality now calls Fortuner home. This allows users to duplicate applications from their mobile phone.
Navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze are included natively and occupants can also access their music libraries and streaming accounts through apps like Apple Music, Joox, Spotify, and SoundCloud. Wireless telephony is supported via Bluetooth with a USB input for additional media options.
The 2.8 GD-6 (mid and VX) models are also equipped with built-in Audio Visual Navigation (AVN).
Perhaps the biggest news is the new beefed-up engine that was first seen at Hilux. The power of the 2.8 GD-6 engine has been increased to 150 kW and 500 Nm.
Toyota says the six-speed automatic transmission, in turn, has been recalibrated to allow for earlier lockout to improve acceleration and cooling performance, especially during towing.
Another victory for the 2020 Fortuner is that the towing capacity of the 2.4 GD-6 4×4 models has seen an increase of 800 kg, now registering 3.3 tonnes and matches that of the 2.8 GD-6 4×4 model.
Subsequently, the 2.8 GD-6 4×4 models now also have a towing capacity of 3,300 kg (an increase of 300 kg over the previous model).
LED and PDC headlights now standard on 2.4 models
The 2.4 GD-6 variants now also include Park Distance Control (PDC) along with full LED lighting, cruise control, and touchscreen infotainment. A new multi-information display screen now includes a large digital speed readout and steering wheel angle indicator.
The ‘mid-grade’ 2.8 GD-6 adds an electrochromic rearview mirror, power seat adjustment for both driver and passenger, climate control and rear fog lights. A leather steering wheel, leather instrument panel accents and matte wood trim complete the interior offering.
The new VX model features heated driver and passenger seats, welcome lighting and the Toyota Safety Sense system that integrates a pre-collision system, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition. .
The Japanese automaker has also launched its ‘connect’ telematics system, which includes an in-car Wi-Fi access point and complimentary 15Gb data. Once linked to their profile, customers can manage their vehicle through the MyToyota app.
The company says the app enables on-demand service bookings, vehicle information and history, tracking data, as well as Toyota Connect data top-up services and much more, even lately, including the ability to renew your vehicle’s license. online.
