Severe thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday in several provinces of the country, with the South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) warning of heavy rain, localized flooding, hail and high winds.
Gauteng, eastern Northwest Province, eastern Free State, western Mpumalanga, southwest Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal are expected to be the hardest hit by thunderstorms.
The SAWS also warned that thunderstorms could bring with them the possibility of localized flooding in low-lying areas and the risk of damage to cars on the roads, as well as critical infrastructure.
This could cause damage to both informal and formal settlements, houses and commercial structures.

All home insurers saw an increase in claims for storm damage in the north of the country in late October, warning that homeowners should take precautions now that summer storm season has arrived.
Insurer Dialdirect has offered these tips to help you stay safe in bad weather:
- Check structures around your home for weak spots, clear debris from gutters, secure items that could become deadly projectiles, and cut down dead trees and branches.
- Heavy rains are often associated with lightning. Install surge protection plugs and / or unplug appliances before the storm hits.
- If you are in an area prone to hail, make sure the structures around your home can support the additional weight and that you are equipped to clear any hail build-up. Reinforce structures where necessary.
