WASHINGTON – The global count of people infected with the coronavirus surpassed 50 million on Monday as US President-elect Joe Biden prepared to name the scientists who will lead the country’s response to his disastrous outbreak.

The incoming leader made the promise in his first speech since he was projected as the winner of the presidential election, noting that he plans to prioritize the pandemic from the start.

COVID-19 has left more than 237,000 people dead in the US and is on the rise across the country, which last week rejected Donald Trump in a scathing poll.

“On Monday I will appoint a group of leading scientists and experts as transition advisers to help take the Biden-Harris plan and turn it into a real plan that will begin on January 20, 2021,” Biden told his supporters, referring to the day in which he will be sworn in as commander-in-chief and obtain the keys to the White House.

“The team that is being formed will face these challenges on day one,” said its new transition website.

According to a Johns Hopkins University tracker, the number of cases in the United States is approaching 10 million and shows no signs of slowing down, despite Trump’s claim that the world’s largest economy is “turning the corner.” .

PARTIES IN MYANMAR STREET

The raging pandemic, which first emerged in central China nearly a year ago, did not deter voters in Myanmar, where excited crowds gathered in their eagerness to cast their votes.

Hundreds of staunch supporters ignored the warnings and gathered in premature celebration, dancing, singing and waving flags outside the Yangon headquarters of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD).

“We will gladly go to the hospital for a victory in the NLD!” Thazin Swe, 25, said as he praised Aung San Suu Kyi’s likely victory.

School teacher Hnin Wut Yee, 23, said she had “concerns” about the lack of social distancing, adding: “We all look at each other with suspicion.”

Cases of the coronavirus in Myanmar have skyrocketed in recent months, causing swathes of the country to be blocked and forcing online campaigns, where hate speech between rival factions has worsened.

But Suu Kyi refused to postpone the elections, a decision that could have “serious public health ramifications,” the International Crisis Group watchdog said.

1.25 MILLION DEAD

The virus has now claimed more than 1.25 million lives worldwide, according to an AFP tally, and more than 50 million cases have been recorded worldwide.

Europe, with 12.6 million cases and 306,000 deaths, is once again the epicenter of the pandemic.

Under the new measures in Greece, people can only leave home if they make a request by mobile phone and receive authorization.

Essential stores can remain open, including supermarkets and pharmacies.

The hairdressers were also allowed to stay open, but only for two more days, and they were reserved.

The measures follow the imposition of heavy restrictions in Italy, France, Ireland and the United Kingdom, while Germany and other nations have also imposed new rules.

Britain has banned all non-resident foreigners from Denmark after a mutated version of the coronavirus linked to mink farms was found in humans.

Royals and politicians in London observed a low-key and socially estranged remembrance Sunday without the usual solemn spectacle to honor the country’s war dead.

And protesters took to the streets again around the world, including in Leipzig, Germany, where Anne, 65, told AFP: “There is no virus for me.”

After Europe, the most affected regions are Latin America and the Caribbean with 11.6 million cases and 411,700 deaths, Asia with 11 million cases and 176,600 deaths, and the United States and Canada with 10.1 million infections and 247,600 deaths.
