CAPE TOWN – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said Monday that it was more than prepared for nearly 100 by-elections on Wednesday.

South Africa will see more than 400 candidates fight in 95 by-elections in 55 municipalities in the nine provinces.

The IEC said that more than 600,000 voters were on the list of certified voters for the various by-elections. These would be the first by-elections held since the country entered a state of disaster in March and would be held in all provinces.

Electoral director Sy Mamabolo said that despite budget cuts and the high number of by-elections, the IEC was more than prepared.

“The IEC is confident that all logistical, human resource and security preparations are in place to ensure free, fair and safe elections on Wednesday,” Mamabolo said.

Mamabolo also confirmed that budget cuts had affected the commission’s operations. He encouraged registered voters to demonstrate in his number to ensure the credibility of the elections.

“We also need voters to present themselves in numbers to participate and give credibility and legitimacy to the election result,” he said.
