The draws for the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup took place this afternoon in Cairo with the participation of four top-level South African teams.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs will represent South Africa in the CAF Champions League, while Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic will participate in the CAF Confederations Cup.
Both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates were exempted from the preliminary round draw thanks to their continental qualification, however their opponents from the next qualifying round were also named.
Kaizer Chiefs will travel to Cameroon for the first game of the CAF Champions League
The Kaizer Chiefs suffered a tough first round draw in the form of Cameroonian Premier League champions PWD Bamenda. Bamenda beat Cameroonian giants Coton Sport for the league title last season and it will undoubtedly be a difficult test for Amakhosi.
If the Kaizer Chiefs overtake defending champions Cameroon, another difficult task awaits them in the form of Angolan giants Premiero De Agosto in the next round.
Bloemfontein’s Celtic attracts leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo
Bloemfontein Celtic also hosted a tough CAF Confederations Cup match in first place after drawing AS Maniema from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Maniema finished the 2019/20 campaign in third place behind Champions TP Mazembe and runner-up AS Vita Club.
