A KwaZulu-Natal man was electrocuted to death by exposed wiring from an illegal electrical connection, commonly known as an izinyoka.
Police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the incident occurred in Tongaat, north of Durban, on Sunday morning.
The discovery of the lifeless body of Preansun Govender, 27, was found lying in a trench next to the illegal connection.
Mbhele said the police opened an investigation file after the incident.
Police received an emergency call at 06:00 and responded to the Edmunds Burry Crescent Belvedere incident, Mbhele said.
“The body was taken to the Phoenix government morgue for an autopsy,” he said.
An incident report from the South African Reaction Unit (RUSA) details that the Tongaat Operations Center received a call at approximately 04:56 from a passerby who had made the discovery.
“Upon arrival, the reaction agents found the victim on a path laid in a ditch over illegally connected power lines. The cables led to an informal settlement on Edmundsbury Street in Flamingo Heights, Tongaat.”
RUSA further stated that eThekwini’s electrical department was called to the scene and, upon arrival, disconnected the power.
