JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Department of Education said it is accelerating the investigation into the drowning of Keamogetswe Seboko, who died on the school grounds.

Seboko’s body was found floating in Laerskool Bekker’s pool on January 15 of this year.

That was the same day Parktown Boys’ High School student Enoch Mpianzi drowned while at an orientation camp in the Northwest.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi met with the governing body of the school to present a report based on an independent investigation into the tragedy.

The investigation concluded that the school principal and four teachers are responsible for Seboko’s death.

Lesufi said the department has given the school a grace period to ignore the report, before creating criteria for adequate compensation.

“The circumstances are very delicate, very difficult. What we are doing as a department, we are using previous court cases that are similar as a barometer, ”said Lesufi.

The president of the school’s governing body, Willie Dry, said the tragedy has caused confusion among educators and students.

“We had to deal with the principal on one side who was suspended and that put a lot of pressure on the school and it happened right before COVID. It’s amazing to see what the teachers have been through. I can only pray to God that no school ever goes through this again because it is so difficult, ”Dry said.
