PlayStation has made a green switch from the PS4 to the PS5. When the PS5 launches next week, you’ll notice that something is missing from the PS5’s retail box: plastic. The PS5 packaging, unlike the PS4 packaging, does not contain plastic. This is not only different from the packaging of the PS4, but it is different from the packaging of the Xbox Series X, which features shockproof Styrofoam on the inside. Instead, the PS5 makes use of some sort of recycled cardboard alternative, though silicone can still be found inside, courtesy of things like cable ties.
Added to this, the PS5 controller, the DualSense, also comes in a recycled box, which is a great change from the DualShock 4 controller, which came in translucent polymer film because it looks good on store shelves.
Of course, the PS5, being a gaming machine, is going to leave a substantial carbon footprint in the world, but it’s good to see that Sony is environmentally conscious and avoids adding to this footprint where it can, especially since this certainly does. It will cost Sony money, probably in more ways than one.
Fortunately for Sony, all of this will return and more with the PS5, which, as we noted in our review, is a great console.
“Now that hours and hours have been spent with it, we can safely say that the actual experience of playing the PlayStation 5 is honestly a delight,” reads the opening of our review of the console. “What I suspect will come to define the next generation of consoles, regardless of which one you are talking about, is relatively simple: beautiful graphics and very short load times.”
The PS5 is scheduled to launch on November 12 or November 19, depending on where you are in the world. Also, it will cost $ 400 or $ 500, depending on the version of the machine you use.
