‘Novak Djokovic has demonstrated sustained excellence’: ATP salutes Serbia after historic achievement
ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi has hailed Novak Djokovic as ‘just amazing’ after he won a record-equaling sixth year-end world number one.
The ATP confirmed Djokovic as the year-end world number one for 2020 on Friday, adding to his crowns from 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018 to tie Pete Sampras in the record books.
Djokovic also becomes the oldest man in history to finish his year at the top of the world rankings.
“Finishing the year number one is one of the most impressive achievements in our sport, one that requires sustained excellence throughout the season,” Gaudenzi said.
“To see Novak accomplish this for the sixth time and match Pete’s record is just incredible, and he continues to cement his place in the history books.”
The record will surely have real meaning for Djokovic as well, who has always named Sampras as his idol.
“Pete was someone I looked up to when I was little, so equaling his record is a dream come true,” Djokovic said.
