The vice president of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, Mluleki Ndobe, died at his home in Durban on Friday night.
“He was not feeling well for some time,” speaker Nontembeko Boyce said Saturday.
“With his passing, our legislature and indeed the entire country has lost a righteous leader, a deep thinker and a true servant of the people.
“In this hour of pain, we are comforted to know that Mr. Ndobe leaves a rich legacy for all of us to emulate. His rare qualities earned him tremendous respect among his peers. “
Ndobe joined the legislature in 2019 after two terms as mayor of Harry Gwala District Township.
the The former SA Student Congress and leader of the ANC Youth League was also a former chairman of the ANC Harry Gwala region and former deputy party secretary in KwaZulu-Natal.
At the time of his death, he was a member of the ANC provincial working committee.
Sources close to Ndobe told TimesLIVE that he had cancer and found out only when the disease was in an advanced stage. It is believed that he committed suicide.
Boyce praised Ndobe for continuing to offer his services to the people of KwaZulu-Natal even when he was ill.
“We will miss him for his ability to unite members of the legislature from across the political spectrum toward a common goal,” he said.
ANC spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Nhlakanipho Ntombela, described Ndobe as a servant of the people, a dedicated and disciplined cadre who had served the movement on several levels.
He said Ndobe has been in and out of the hospital battling cancer. “In all the responsibilities that the organization gave him, he remained an activist focused on improving the lives of our people,” said Ntombela.
