22-year-old vlogger Daniel Oschadleus is used to living in a digital world. However, when he began his #SATownTour tour in a Volvo XC40, he turned to a South African atlas printed in 1984.
Volvo Car South Africa is launching a campaign in South Africa called #HiddenGem. It is based on a pertinent idea: that, after all, we have passed, the summer and the ability to move are more valuable than ever. The idea is that this summer, we will get into our cars, rather than planes or trains, to safely re-enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors.
We will do this to reunite with family and revisit our places of importance and significance – our #HiddenGem.

The city tour
When Volvo learned that Oschadleus was planning its #SATownTour, the synergies between its event and #HiddenGem were clear.
Charmagne Mavudzi, Director of Consumer Experience for Volvo Car South Africa, says: “When Daniel approached us with his idea of navigating the country using old printed maps, we were really interested in seeing what he would find. our international travel plans canceled, I think Daniel’s new way of traveling will ignite his passion for local tourism. “
Oschadleus has embarked on a four-year #SATownTour. Armed with his XC40 and his trusty atlas, he plans to travel to every city in South Africa and to more than 277 municipalities. He explains: “That atlas will help me find many hidden and forgotten gems in our country. I intend to encourage locals to explore the many incredible places South Africa has to offer.”
The first highlight of his #SATownTour was the Long Tom Pass between Lydenburg and Sabie, named after the famous Long Tom canyon, and the discovery of the tallest brewery in Africa. Oschadleus reveals: “Hops Hollow is also the second tallest brewery in the world. It is an amazing microbrewery 10 miles from Lydenburg and 21 miles from Sabie. It is mostly frequented by the locals, who assured me that the beer is absolutely excellent (I was drive, so I couldn’t test it) “.

Wild horses?
The second #HiddenGem he discovered on his XC40 is Kaapsehoop.
Oschadleus adds: “It is a small town, perched on top of a mountain 6000 feet above sea level, in Mpumalanga. It was originally started because the Dutch found traces of gold there. That was in 1873. Today, it is beautiful but Extremely small the town is populated mainly by guest houses and restaurants. It is also the only place in South Africa where you can find wild horses. It really is a #HiddenGem. “
Although not normally considered a #HiddenGem, Oschadleus has also been exploring the Kruger National Park.
He notes: “Millions of South Africans have never visited the park, so maybe it’s a #HiddenGem for them. We went on dirt and tar roads. The vehicle was amazing. The suspension is wonderful. Our Volvo also has a good ride; you can see the animals on the grass. Plus, thanks to its ground clearance, you can also do a bit of off-roading. “
