Manchester United were deeply embarrassed after a surprising 2-1 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League. Former Chelsea star Demba Ba was on the scoreboard to increase the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But a positive one was Donny van de Beek’s performance, although the Red Devils coach took him out even though they chased the game.
Solskjaer had a proven point after Van de Beek outshined his United teammates against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League.
The Red Devils put on one of their most chaotic performances in recent times in Europe after losing 2-1 to the Turkish minnows.
The first goal conceded was described as “almost comical” by Martin Keown in a co-comment and he was gracious.
As United pushed for a first game, all 10 players were at the top of the field.
Even the last runner, Nemanja Matic, was about 25 meters from the middle line.
After clearing the ball, he left only former Chelsea striker Ba, who simply ran over to Dean Henderson before calmly passing the Englishman’s side.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when Deniz Turuc pocketed Juan Mata before setting up Edin Visca to double his lead.
Anthony Martial’s well-designed header moments later cut the deficit in half, but it wasn’t enough as United struggled to create something remarkable.
He is sure to see the pressure build on Solskjaer, who also saw Van de Beek put on a good display in midfield.
In just over an hour, the Dutchman completed 93 percent of his passes, had 81 touches, had four successful tackles and tackles and made a key pass.
However, the former Ajax player was retired with 30 minutes to go despite United still needing a goal, while his replacement Paul Pogba did not do much better.
The result leaves serious questions about Solskjaer’s future, while this weekend’s clash against Everton now looks vital.
But the Norwegian refused to engage in conversation about his work, defiantly supporting himself and his coaches.
He said, “I refuse to comment on such a thing. It’s early. Opinions are there all the time. We have to stay strong.
“I am employed by the club to do a job and I am doing the best I can with my staff.”
Speaking of the first goal, Solskjaer was taken aback but took the blame.
“You don’t see goals like that at this level,” he added.
“You shouldn’t concede easy goals like that. When you concede goals like that, winning games is much more difficult.
“We have not fulfilled our roles, it is my responsibility. A short corner and we forget our defense duties.”
