A charge of pointing a firearm against a woman who drew a weapon during an EFF protest outside a Clicks store in a shopping center in Port Elizabeth has been dropped.

Diane Attwell, 52, became involved in a verbal altercation during the protest against a controversial hair ad, later removed by the health and beauty retailer, at the Walmer Park shopping center in September.

The incident was captured on video and went viral on social media. Attwell was due to appear in Port Elizabeth magistrates court on Friday.

Algoa FM radio reported that his lawyer, Alwyn Griebenow, had made statements to the director of the public prosecutor’s office (DPP) and the charges were later dropped on Friday.

HeraldLIVE reported at the time of the incident that as tempers flared inside the mall, a woman could be heard in the video clip yelling, “Go back to Europe!”

As a gray-haired woman was escorted away from the protesters by security guards, another person yelled: “Draw your gun! Get out your gun! “”

The gray-haired woman quickly pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it directly at the protesters who continued to shout “Shoot! Shoot!”

Griebenow told Algoa FM that after seeing the images, they felt that no crime had been committed.
