President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation next week, Presiding Minister Jackson Mthembu confirmed Thursday, Nov. 5.
Speaking during a press conference, Mthembu said the president will address the nation on the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic following a virtual cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
The minister said that the cabinet expressed concern during the meeting that some South Africans were “behaving recklessly and irresponsibly as if Covid-19 no longer exists.”
“The Cabinet calls on all people in South Africa to continue to adhere to health protocols of practicing social distancing, wearing masks in public and washing our hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based disinfectant, and avoiding large gatherings.
“This considered constant behavior is still the best defense to protect ourselves and others against the virus. Our responsible actions will ensure that we minimize infection rates as we continue to rebuild our economy. ”
Mthembu further said that the cabinet will discuss the results of the national coronavirus command council (NCCC) to be held next week.
“President Ramaphosa will subsequently brief the nation on developments in South Africa’s risk-adjusted strategy to manage the spread of Covid-19.”

The Minister added that the Cabinet also welcomed the commitment to the sector determination of the taxi industry.
“The declaration adopted in the National Taxi Lekgotla last week is fundamental to building a more efficient and safe public transport sector.
“The results bring the country closer to formalizing an empowerment model for the taxi industry and will place it on a path of sustainable growth. “
Medium-term budget policy statement
Meanwhile, Mthembu further said that the Cabinet welcomed the 2020 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement presented by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni last month.
“The budget is there to chart a course that limits the government’s operational spending.
“It also supports economic growth to drive much-needed job creation. The allocations support our drive to revive the economy from the devastation of the Covid-19 pandemic and attract investment. “
