ISTANBUL – Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his team’s defense in the first half of Wednesday’s 2-1 Champions League loss to Istanbul Basaksehir was “unforgivable.”
United fell behind in the 12th minute in Turkey when a pass from Edin Visca found Demba Ba in space at the midline and the striker ran forward before finishing over Dean Henderson.
Basaksehir doubled his lead before the break when Juan Mata lost possession and Ba became a supplier for Visca to score.
“The first is that we play a short corner and we forget the man upstairs. That is unforgivable … We have not fulfilled our role, it is my responsibility,” Solskjaer told reporters.
“You don’t see goals like that at this level. You shouldn’t concede easy goals like that. When you do, winning games is much more difficult.”
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes said his defense was “disgraceful”.
“It all depends on the organization. It’s like under-10 football. I have no idea what the defense was doing,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“The goal is comical, ridiculous.”
The loss came on the heels of Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal and while the results have prompted speculation about Solskjaer’s work, the Norwegian said it was not the time to panic.
“It’s early. Opinions are there all the time. We have to stay strong,” Solskjaer added.
United will travel to Everton in the league on Saturday.
