WhatsApp launches messages that disappear after a week

WhatsApp revealed on Thursday that it was going to implement the option for users to have “disappearing messages” that will disappear after seven days.

The Facebook-owned messenger service said in a blog post Thursday that it was offering the option to users to help “the conversation feel lighter and more private.”

“Today, WhatsApp messages tend to stay on our phones forever. While it’s great to preserve the memories of friends and family, most of what we ship doesn’t have to last forever. Our goal is to make WhatsApp conversations feel as close to face-to-face as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever. “

When disappearing messages is enabled, new messages sent to a chat will disappear after seven days. In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn the disappearing messages on or off. In groups, administrators will have control.

“We started with seven days because we believe it offers the peace of mind that the conversations are not permanent, but they are still practical so that you do not forget what you were talking about,” explains the blog.

“The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there for as long as you need it and then disappear when you don’t.”

The disappear option will be implemented for users during November.
