A technician in a northwestern municipality was arrested after he allegedly offered to cancel a client’s municipal debt of R1 million for R112,000.

According to North West Hawks spokesman Capt.Tlangelani Rikhotso, the 52-year-old was arrested by the Hawks’ serious commercial crimes investigation unit on Wednesday.

“The suspect, who works as a technician in the Maquassi Hills municipality, allegedly approached a customer whose municipal account was approximately R1 million in arrears and offered to cancel the debt in exchange for a payment of R112,000.

“The matter was reported to the Hawks and the suspect was arrested during an operation after he was found in possession of the R112,000 that the client paid him,” Rikhotso said.

He will appear at the Wolmaransstad Magistrates Court on Thursday.
