Dozens of mourners, some inconsolable, lined Marine Drive in Bluff, south of Durban, as the white hearse carrying the body of an alleged drug lord, Simone Jasmin, passed by Tuesday morning.

Jasmin, 29, known as the Queen of the South in the Wentworth community because her life resembled that of the main character in a Mexican soap opera, was killed in a well-orchestrated murder Thursday.

The community was divided when the funeral procession headed to a church near their home in Bluff.

Some rejoiced at the end of her reign as a suspected drug lord, while others wept openly as they remembered her for the birthday parties she threw for children at Wentworth and the food baskets she delivered to the community.

Jasmin, allegedly the leader of the notorious Cartel gang, was out on bail on murder and attempted murder charges when he was shot multiple times in an electronic calling vehicle. He died in the hospital.

Jasmin’s alleged drug ring is believed to have spread to Umlazi and KwaMashu and was linked to several murders over the years.

Queen of the south is an adaptation of the soap opera The Queen of the South, which centers on Teresa Mendoza, a poor Mexican woman who gets rich building a vast drug empire.
