Teraco has announced that it has begun construction of a new hyperscale data center with 38MW of critical power load in Ekurhuleni, South Africa.
The facility is called JB4 and it will be the largest data center in Africa once it is built.
Phase one of the JB4 data center is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2022 and the entire data center will require a total investment of $ 250 million (R4 billion) to complete, Teraco CEO Jan Hnizdo told MyBroadband.
The schedule for the construction of the second phase will be based on Teraco’s operations and demand for cloud and hosting services.
Hnizdo said Teraco is poised for great growth as demand for cloud services continues to increase.
“South Africa is strategically located at the tip of the African continent and, as a result, is positioned as a technology hub and data centers for sub-Saharan Africa,” said Hnizdo.
“This is further underpinned by the growing land and submarine fiber connectivity with the rest of Africa.”
“The continued increase in cloud adoption in Africa is also being made possible by investments in critical infrastructure, including hyperscale data center installations like JB4.”
He said that Teraco continues to invest heavily in ICT infrastructure in South Africa, enabling the global cloud giants to serve the sub-Saharan African region.
Teraco JB4 Data Center Details
Teraco’s JB4 data center is the seventh data center developed by the company and brings critical power carrying capacity at the company’s facilities to more than 110MW.
This includes Isando Campus JB1 / JB3 (39MW), Bredell JB2 (13MW), Rondebosch Cape Town CT1 (3MW), Brackenfell Cape Town CT2 (18MW) and Durban (1MW).
The JB4 data center will comprise a whopping 50,000 m2 of the building’s structure served by 80MW of electricity supply, and will have 16,000m2 of room space with 38MW critical power load when finished.
It will be built in two phases on six hectares of land, and Phase 1 will deliver half of the total hall space and critical energy load.
“The new data center development is being built in accordance with global hyperscale requirements as well as international compliance standards and will augment the existing portfolio of ISO9001, ISO27001, PCI-DSS and ISAE3402 certified data center facilities. Teraco said.
