A major gas discovery was made off the southern coast of South Africa on Wednesday, Total revealed. The find has been labeled “significant” and is a continuation of the Brulpadda field that was identified nearby nearly two years ago.

According to the titans of the industry, the team dug nearly 3.5 km to make this gas discovery. Total will assess how they can access the untapped reserve as they try to strengthen their dominance in South Africa.
“Total has made a significant discovery of gas condensate at the Luiperd prospect, located in Block 11B / 12B in the Outeniqua Basin. This discovery follows the adjacent work that opened the Brulpadda discovery in 2019, which turned out to be a major new oil province in the region. “
“The Luiperd well was drilled to a total depth of about 3,400 meters, finding 73 meters of net gas in well-developed and good-quality Lower Cretaceous reservoirs. The well will now be tested to assess the reservoir’s dynamic delivery capacity. “

Where is this new gas discovery?
- The discovery was made 175 kilometers off the southern coast of South Africa, just east of Mossel Bay.
- Block 11B / 12B covers an area of 19,000 square kilometers
- This reserve has a depth range of 200 to 1,800 meters.
- As highlighted on the map below, the Luiperd field is right next to the Brulpadda reserve, it was discovered in 2019.
South African gas discovery: who has access to the reserve?
The block will be operated by various parties, including Total, which has a 45% working share. They will operate together with Qatar Petroleum (25%), CNR International (20%) and Main Street, a South African consortium (10%).
