“One of the recommendations we made was that the definition of television should be changed as it is in the legislation [and] expanded to take into account how the media have converged, changed and made room for content to be consumed through other devices, ”he said.
Devices include, but are not limited to, smartphones, tablets, and computers.
Tladi said that if people were streaming SABC content, a process was needed to ensure they had valid TV licenses.
“That is what we have proposed for the legislature to consider, otherwise it will leave the SABC behind because we are no longer playing in the same media environment … We are supposed to do what everyone does,” he said.
But Tladi admitted that consumers would not get value for their money paying for TV licenses if they only used other streaming platforms.
“Nowhere in our legislation is value attributed to paying for a television license … Whenever a person buys a television, they must have a license. You need a license for it, ”he said.
The corporation had made headlines recently for a number of reasons, including downsizing and troubled finances. Some had even suggested that the station was on its last legs. But Tladi criticized that view.
