The head of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Natasha Mazzone, says the party will report to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni to the Ethics Committee following comments he made about Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape.

In his medium-term budget policy speech on Wednesday, Mboweni outlined the structural and infrastructure reforms that he said were at the center of the recovery plan. The plan would include renovations to hospitals, including Tygerberg Hospital, which Mboweni says still has a black-and-white section, structurally.

He said in part: “The budget mechanism for infrastructure will support new projects, including through combined financing in partnership with the private sector. This includes hospitals, hospital projects in KwaZulu-Natal and in the Western Cape, such as Tygerberg Hospital. By the way, this Tygerberg Hospital still has a black and white section. There’s a section where blacks used to go and there’s a section where whites used to go. Structurally it is still there, so you have to remove it and build a completely new hospital there. Is incredible.”

But Mazzone said this is a “blatant and damaging lie” and that he would indict the Ethics Committee. Mazzone has asked Mboweni to apologize.

“It is a slap in the face for all the hard working doctors, nurses and employees in the hospital who daily risk their lives to protect us in the Western Cape from the Covid crisis. Minister Mboweni should be ashamed of himself. A member of Parliament cannot deceive the House or the people ”.

“For this reason, I will bring a charge to the Ethics Committee against Minister Mboweni. I look forward to a full apology to the Western Cape Prime Minister, to the MEC for Health in the Western Cape, but most importantly, to the Tygerberg Hospital. Under our supervision, nobody gets away with it, ”he said in a video shared on the party’s social media pages.

Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo also criticized Mboweni after his speech.

“This is an outright lie and Minister Mboweni should apologize for misleading the House. This fake news has one objective in mind: to detract from the horrible truth that the national government is going to invest another R10.5 billion in the rescue of SAA, ”he said.

In response, Mboweni said the district attorney was “exaggerating.”

Please don’t overreact. There are still two structures at Tygeberg Hospital. One was for blacks and the other for whites. They exist. What no longer exists is the segregation of patients. Thats the reality. You may not like it, ”he said.
