‘Killer’ babysitter story doesn’t add up, mom tells court

Pathologist Dr. Fortunato Beccia testified in court that reports showed the boy died from strangulation, suffocation and a broken neck.

Mnguni said that he did not even remember how he had given his statement to the police. “My mind is not working well. I am very disturbed and I would like to refresh my memory and read my statement again,” she said.

“I knew the investigating officer had taken the babysitter’s phone, so I asked her to open it up and check if we couldn’t find some answers.”

She said that she and Sihle Tshabalala, the boy’s father, along with the investigating officer, discovered that Tsabane had sent WhatsApp messages to her sister related to the boy’s murder.

However, the messages could not be read in court even though they had already been interpreted.

Prosecutor Adv Salame Scheepels said the state had found a Sesotho interpreter who would be available at a later stage.

Scheepels said the content of the messages came from screenshots taken from Tsabane’s phone.

Mnguni said that Tsabane was found half naked by her aunt, who was the first to enter the house.

“She claimed that the three men who attacked her attempted to rape her after forcing her to drink a concoction similar to the liquid that she claimed was poison.”

The matter was postponed to Thursday.
