A retiree has been charged with the premeditated murder of his wife, who was murdered at her Cape Town home last weekend.

William Carter, 71, appeared in Muizenberg Magistrates Court on Wednesday. He was arrested upon his release from the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound the night of Fran Carter’s murder.

Police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut said officers responded to the house on Uitsig Road, Marina Da Gama, at 03:30 last Saturday.

“Upon the arrival of the police to the scene, a 71-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The body of his 65-year-old wife was found with a stab on the kitchen floor,” he said .

The man had been admitted to hospital, Traut confirmed at the time.

Carter was arrested on Monday.

“The suspect was arrested at a medical facility at the time of his discharge at 09:30 in the morning,” said police spokesman Capt. FC van Wyk.

“In addition to the murder charge, firearms-related charges are also being investigated against him.”

National Provincial Tax Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said Carter had appointed a legal aid attorney and was expected to apply for bail on November 4.

According to the Argus Weekend, Carter had been found dumped outside the couple’s home, while Fran was found dead in the kitchen.

While in the hospital, he told the publication that two men had attacked him and his wife at their home that morning.

He claimed not to remember much of what had happened as it was “a blur.”

He said the bullet hurt his stomach, which he claimed he understood had gone through me during an apparent fight over the gun.

Carter had reportedly told the publication that it had been “a huge shock” when he was told at the hospital what had happened to him.
