CAPE TOWN – SA Rugby is investigating a violation of Covid-19 regulations after a young rugby player for a club on the border tragically passed away after sustaining a serious injury during a tournament match.
Applications Work Zondani died in a tournament at Ngqwele Location near King William’s Town on Saturday.
“This is a tragic incident that should never have happened, and our hearts go out to Vizicelo’s family, friends and teammates,” Mark Alexander, SA Rugby president, said in a statement Wednesday.
“Unfortunately this goes directly against our Covid-19 guidelines on returning to training as all amateur rugby matches have been suspended for the year due to the pandemic and all of our unions, clubs and other bodies know about it. .
“This tournament should never have taken place and we will launch a full investigation into the incident, as well as the tournament.”
SA Rugby reiterated that its Covid-19 Committee (CovCom) had approved a proposal to allow amateur clubs, universities, associate members and school teams to return to training under certain strict conditions, and that no return to the game will be allowed in 2020.
