BANGKOK – Isuzu revealed its new MU-X SUV in Thailand on Wednesday and, if first impressions are anything to go by, it looks like a more formidable rival to the likes of Toyota’s Fortuner and Ford’s Everest.
Of course, this new MU-X is based on the latest generation Isuzu D-Max bakkie, which will be manufactured in South Africa from early 2022. However, we are still awaiting confirmation of local Isuzu plans for the new. SUV.
While it shares its basic ladder frame chassis with the new D-Max, Isuzu has done more to differentiate the exterior styling this time around, with completely unique front styling and a body that doesn’t look like its pick-up cousin.
As is the norm in this class of vehicle, the bakkie’s leaf spring rear suspension also gives way to a more comfortable coil spring setup at the rear.
The engine range carries over from the D-Max, with the most exciting option being the revised 3-liter turbodiesel unit producing 140 kW at 3600 rpm and 450 Nm between 1600 and 2600 revolutions. Isuzu also offers a 110 kW, 350 Nm 1.9-liter unit in Thailand, although SA will likely only get the 3-liter.
The cabin is quite similar to what we see on the new D-Max, with the centerpiece being a new 23cm touchscreen infotainment system, but the trim and materials on the MU-X look a bit more luxurious and Isuzu has also launched an ambient lighting system.
The SUV also offers seven seats, which offer a wide range of adjustments, and that’s sure to outperform the small folding seats you’ll find on one of its rivals.
You can also expect the new Isuzu MU-X to come with more advanced driver assistance devices.
